Originally born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Yolian Y. Ortiz moved to the United States by pure luck. In 1997, her family made the move for a better life to a city called Springfield in Massachusetts. She holds a B.A. in Communication and minor in History from Bay Path College (now University) in Longmeadow, MA and a Masters of Arts in Multimedia Communications at The Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA.
She truly embodies the Multimedia Journalist title. Ortiz started working in the television industry as a freelancer at the young age of 15 doing commercials and voice over in Spanish for Telemundo in Hartford, CT.
During her undergrad, she took an internship with the local NBC affiliate (WWLP) in Springfield, MA. She was hired right after her internship to work as an Associate/Web producer. She then transitioned to the position of Photojournalist/Multimedia Journalist.
In New England, Ortiz covered the June 2011 Tornado that created a 32-mile path of destruction, Hurricane Irene and the October snow storm that left New England without power for more than a month.
She also participated in the Miss Massachusetts USA pageants. She placed in the top 5 of the Miss Teen Massachusetts USA 2004 pageant. Later, made it to the top 12 for Miss Massachusetts USA 2007 and was named Miss Amity. She also held the Miss Jr. Massachusetts title in 2005.
In 2011, she moved to Savannah, Georgia to work for the NBC affiliate (WSAV) and help start a new lifestyle/Magazine style show called "The Southern Scene."
Before coming to FOX 46 Charlotte, she was at South Carolina's Educational Television (SCETV-PBS). Ortiz was the Multimedia Specialist and Producer for the regional station ETV Carolinas in Rock Hill, SC and produced long-form documentaries about the Palmetto State and was the Director of Photography for a national show called “For Your Home.”
Dedicated, reliable and a go getter is how many of her friends, co-worker and family view Ortiz.
