Edward R. Murrow Award Winning Broadcaster WJZY-WMYT TV, the FOX O&O in Charlotte, NC (Market #22) is seeking an Audio Operator (Technician.) This position reports to the Production & Operations Manager. The Audio technician will operate the audio board during live newscasts and other productions, properly mixing various sources including anchor mics, audio from live remotes, animated opens and video clips. Responsibilities and duties include: Operate audio board during fast-paced newscasts, mixing various sources including anchor mics, audio from live remotes, animated opens and video clips. Maintain wireless mic and IFB packs, ensuring fresh batteries before each show. Responsible for monitoring crews that are dialing in on IFB lines and obtaining mic checks from talent before each live shot. Must be able to route the proper mix-minus audio sub-mix to each IFB line. Must be able to put live callers on the air. Ensure that the correct audio mix is going out to our Closed Captioning vendor at all times. Ability to help troubleshoot audio issues with input from our engineers. Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills: A thorough understanding and knowledge of broadcast TV production is desired, including but not limited to the following assignments: studio camera operation; floor director; operating jib camera; maintaining the condition of the studio, sets and props with periodic cleanings. The ability to work under pressure and in a cohesive team environment. Must be prompt and reliable with a great attitude. Ability to fill in as a Director or Technical Direct is a plus. Minimum of one-year experience in a news production position. High school degree or equivalent is required. Bachelor’s Degree or 2-yr certification preferred. The ideal candidate must have clear verbal skills. Must be willing to work nights and weekends and be able to lift 25 to 50lbs.

Duties include producing sports and news specials. Specials projects may be live or taped; in studio or on location and include regularly scheduled programming and breaking news. Some fill-in news producing may be included. Social media proficiency and leadership is required. Editing experience required and videography experience is helpful. Must become very knowledgeable about the Charlotte region and develop meaningful contacts. Become fluent with the Fox 46 news brand and strive for excellence in headline writing skills. Research stories online and on telephone with appropriate sources and contacts. Level of performance requires a superior command of grammar and broadcast news-writing style. Aggressively participates in covering breaking news in and out of newscasts. Coordinate with web/social team to coordinate coverage for online and on-air. Log and edit video for inclusion on scripts. Accountable for editorial decisions and/or changes made in the control room while the newscast is on the air. Communicates via IFB to provide producer direction and talent instruction to crews in the field and in studio. Collaborate with Executive Producer prior to air and during newscast about changes. Partner with newscast director before, during and after newscast to accomplish creative and clean production. Work with reporters to develop story scripts. Edits reporter scripts and provides feedback. Assign voiceovers and VO-SOTs to reporters and anchors. Work with on-air staff by phone and in person to assist with story development and/or story support. Supervise and oversee the writers assigned to the shift. Assign writing ideas to APs. Edit AP scripts and provide feedback. Maintain open communication with News Director, the news management team and all station personnel to efficiently, respectfully and professionally complete news assignments. Participates in news meetings to provide story and production ideas for any and all newscasts. Participate in special projects and programming. Constantly uses verbal, audible, and visual abilities to perform essential functions. Sits for extended period of time in order to accomplish essential duties. Comply with all Station and Department policies, procedures and guidelines related activities. Occasionally bends stoops and crouches to arrange copy/script paper for work related functions. Must possess a minimum of 2 years’ television news writing and producing experience. College degree in journalism or equivalent is required. iNews and Adobe Premiere Pro experience preferred. It is an essential part of all newsroom employees to be willing to adjust hours to meet the fluctuating demands of a news team in a competitive market. If special events fall on the employee’s day off he/she may be required to participate, if requested. Varied hours may also be required based on the needs of the department. From time to time may be required to produce newscasts to help cover sick/vacation time of others. As part of the news team, holidays that fall Monday through Friday will be worked, time-off requests are approved by management. No vacations will be approved one week prior and during television-rating periods.
