GASTONIA, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - The Gastonia Police Department has identified an elderly woman who was killed when her car was struck by a train Monday night in Gaston County.
The crash happened at 8:14 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18 at 1029 Cox Road, behind Bimbo Bakery.
Aline Clemmer, 84, of Stanley, was operating a 2010 Hyundai traveling north on Cox Road when she entered the railroad crossing at the stop light at NC 7, according to witnesses.
A Norfolk Southern train was traveling east on the railroad tracks causing the signals and barrier devices to activate. According to witnesses, Clemmer moved her vehicle within the crossing, but subsequently backed up onto the rail in the path of the train.
Police said Clemmer died from her injuries on scene.
The Gastonia Police Department Traffic Enforcement Bureau is still actively investigating the incident and Norfolk Southern Railroad is assisting with information.
