1 dead, 4 injured after car accident in South Charlotte

- One person is dead after a car slammed into a tree in the 4100 block of McKee Road just outside of McKee Road Elementary School around 4 a.m. this morning.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police has identified the victim as 14-year-old Joshua Pang who was sitting in the passenger seat at the time of the accident.

Police say four others, including the driver, 18-year-old Seok Wan Andrew Sung, were in the car and transported to Carolinas Medical Center.

Sung is currently listed in critical condition.

According to police, Sung was driving a 2004 Honda Accord Sedan southwest on McKee Road well above the posted 45 mph speed limit. He entered a slight curve in the road to the right, overcorrected and lost control.

The car slid sideways, crossed the double yellow lane divider and into the opposing lane. The vehicle then ran off the road to the left onto the grass where it struck a tree on the passenger side.

Officials say excessive speed was a factor that led to the accident. They say drugs and alcohol do not appear to have played a role in causing the crash. No others vehicles were involved.

Police blocked off McKee Road for several hours this morning to gather information and later, clear the scene. The road has since been reopen for normal traffic flow.

Police are still investigating the crash and whether Sung will face criminal charges.

Anyone with information about this crash is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or the Major Crash Investigation Unit of CMPD at 704-432-2169.
