Severe thunderstorm warning in effect; Ping pong ball sized hail

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of the Charlotte viewing area until 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Counties included in the warning are:

-North central Mecklenburg County

-Southeastern Catawba County

-Southern Iredell County

At 3:51 p.m. a severe thunderstorm was located 7 miles east of Newton or near Catawba moving southeast at 20 mph, according to the NWS.

NWS advises that this storm has a history of blowing down trees and producing hail up to the size of ping pong balls. Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to roofs siding and trees.

Locations impacted include:

-Cornelius

-Mooresville

-Davidson

-Troutman

-Catawba

-Lake Norman State Park

-Lake Norman

-Sherrills Ford

-Doolie

-Terrell.

Lake Norman is in the path of this storm, according to the latest models. Get away from the water
and seek shelter in an interior room in the nearest shelter. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.
