Woman charged with DWI in fatal University City crash

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating a fatal accident in University City.

Maegan McTaggart was driving a 2001 Honda Accord outbound on N. Tryon Street, according to CMPD. She made a sudden lane change from the right lane into the left lane, according to witnesses.

Police said the right front of her car hit the rear of a tractor-trailer that had been stopped for the red light at the intersection of N. Tryon Street and J.M. Keynes Boulevard. The tractor-trailer just started to move forward for the green light when the crash happened.

The right front passenger of the car, Maverick Sloan, 52, was taken to CMC-University with life threatening injuries. Sloan was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to police.

McTaggart was taken to CMC-Main for treatment of injuries sustained during the crash. Police said after investigating it was discovered that she was driving while impaired on alcohol.

McTaggart was released from the hospital Tuesday morning. She has been charged with a DWI, reckless driving, open container and a driver's license BAC .04 restriction.

McTaggart was put in jail under a $26,500 secured bond.

Alcohol is a factor in this crash. Vehicle speed and the use of a seatbelt are under investigation.

Any person who witnessed the crash or has information about the case is asked to call (704) 432-2169 or Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
