Drivers identified in Charlotte area crashes caused by icy roads

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and Charlotte Fire Department spent their night handling several wrecks that happened in the Charlotte early Saturday morning- many of them caused by icy roads and rainy weather. 

Two people died after losing control of their vehicles and running into nearby trees, officials say. 

Around 5:30 a.m., officers were called to the 2400 block of Shopton Road near Ayrshire Glen Place where they located a 1998 Lincoln Town Car that had run off the roadway, went down an embankment and struck a tree. 

Medic pronounced the driver, 43-year-old Humberto Daumont Sanchez, dead on scene. His family has been made aware of his death. No other cars were involved in the crash. 

Police say icy road conditions was a factor in the crash. Sanchez was not under the influence and was not speeding.

Around 5:45 a.m., officers were called to a single-car wreck in the 1300 block of Westinghouse Blvd near Rodney Street where they found a 2000 Nissan Pathfinder that had traveled off the roadway and struck a tree. 

Medic pronounced Shane Dontwell Cornwell, 37, dead on scene. His family has also been notified of his death. 

Cornwell lost control on a bridge due to ice covering the road. He then ran off the left side of the road, causing his car to overturn and hit a tree. 

Authorities say he was wearing a seatbelt. Alcohol is not a contributing factor in this crash.

Medic reported there were a total of 129 traffic accidents since midnight. Some of the victims had life threatening injuries. Most had non-life threatening injuries. The victims were transported to area hospitals. 

Medic also says there were car accidents over bridges and overpasses in south Charlotte and Uptown.
