Legally blind mother struggles to afford high-tech glasses, wants to see her daughter again

- A Rock Hill mother who is legally blind got a glimpse of what her life could look like. She is fighting for the high-tech glasses that will help her see again.

FOX 46 Charlotte is asking for your help to get her results and give the gift of sight.

“I thought I wasn’t ever going to see again,” Brandi Johnson Ervin said. "The way they told me, no treatment is going to help.”

Ervin told FOX 46 Charlotte that she was robbed of her eyesight after a complication in gastric bypass surgery in May 2014. She started to notice a blur in her vision that could not be rubbed away.

“They said, ‘The optic nerve is normally pink. Yours is turning pale gray. There’s no way to get that back,'" Johnson explained.

In May 2016, doctors diagnosed her as legally blind. Ervin can’t do simple activities we all take for granted, like driving to the grocery store, without someone else’s help. She used to design wedding cakes but without her vision, she is out of a job.

Ervin said what hurts the most is when she can’t recognize family members. Depressed that she could no longer watch, she stopped attending her daughter’s marching band performances.

Then she had a change of heart.

“I realized even if I can’t see her, she can see me in the stands, and that makes her proud,” Ervin said.

In June, Ervin had an eye opening experience when she tested out high-tech glasses that gave back her vision.

For the first time in two years, she saw her 6-year-old niece.

“I could see every one of her little teeth…and she said, ‘Aunt Brandi you can see me.’ And I could see her," Ervin said.

Ervin said eSight glasses look like binoculars or 3-D glasses, and brought her 20/400 vision back to perfect 20/20. But the insurance companies won’t cover eSight glasses and Ervin cannot afford the $15,000 price tag.

“I didn’t really get discouraged. I was just trying to figure out how can I get these glasses…because I want to see again…I want to be independent again," she explained.

FOX 46 Charlotte is asking for your help to get this Rock Hill mom results, so she can watch her daughter perform in the high school marching this fall.
