CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - Supportive messages and comments flooded in from people who heard about Ronald Eason, a Purple Heart veteran with a prosthetic leg and lung cancer.
Eason and his wife hired a contractor to do nearly $17,000 of work on their home. The contractor took off with their money and materials.
"I don't understand what would motivate somebody to make a promise and not do the work they said they were gonna do. It's just really sad to see the state that he was in and the things they were trying to do to take care of their home and make it easier and all he got was taken advantage of," said Dale Beatty, the co-founder of Purple Heart Homes.
Purple Heart Homes reached out to us. They help remodel homes for disabled veterans to help with accessibility and safety.
"A lot of us are veterans on our staff. We have a lot of spouses of veterans, dependents of veterans that are part of our team. So, I mean it's like another person like us, that's who we're talking to on the phone. So, it's helping one of our own," Dale said.
We also spoke to Robbie hawk who offered to come all the way from Greenville, North Carolina to help.
"I felt like it was my place to help other people the way that I would like to be helped," Robbie said.
He says Ronald reminds him of someone he holds near and dear.
"I was kind of looking at him like he was my own grandpa and then how it would make me feel," said Robbie.
The Easons filed police reports against the contractor Selina Piazza. She operates her company under more than a half dozen names. According to the reports she could be facing charges of swindling and theft if she's ever caught.
"It's rough on me for one thing because I'm used to doing what I got to do on my own. I never needed anybody's help before. So, it's all just put me in a down mood really. So I don't know, it'll be over soon and I won't have to worry no more. Just waiting on this thing and thinking about this other $3,000 I got to pay this man but I'ma get his money no matter what,” said Ronald.
The Easons are now paying another contractor to help convert their garage into a bedroom and bathroom so he doesn't have to use the stairs.
