For Ardrey Kell's Laura Wallis, teaching is an art

- FOX 46 Charlotte recognizes teachers getting results in the classroom. This week's teacher paints a perfect picture of what an educator should be like.

For Laura Wallis, teaching is an art-- literally.

"She's an art teacher, she engages students together," said Ardrey Kell Principal David Switzer.  "It doesn't matter what ability level, she's gonna challenge them from lowest art students up to the next big artist."

Laura Wallis has taught art for about 13 years; six of those having been at Ardrey Kell.

"Mrs. Wallis is an incredible, phenomenal teacher," said Switzer.  "We have 175 teachers and she stands out as one of my top two to three teachers."

This week, Wallis is being recognized as FOX 46 Charlotte's Teacher Getting Results.

"It's completely overwhelming," Wallis said.

Wallis has a love for art, creativity and her students.

"I literally watch kids grow up and become young adults," she said.  "And grow not only in their art-- but in who they are as people-- that's probably the best part of my job."

An artist herself, you can find her work featured at the Charlotte Government Center in Uptown.  She won second place in professional art category for the National Arts Program.
