Man claims Google Fiber to blame for surge in water bill

- A family living in a north Charlotte neighborhood says that their water bill has tripled and they believe the reason has to do with Google Fiber.

Mike Young lives in the Mallard Creek area with his wife and two daughters. He says his water bill shot up to $300 a month about the same time Google Fiber was installed.

“When they first came out in February, they cut a patch right here, that’s when the water bill skyrocketed when they cut that patch,” Young said.

Are the two linked?

According to Young, the contractor for Google Fiber was out at the home on Monday and said he would return on Tuesday with a plumber to figure out what’s going on and who is responsible.

We followed up on Tuesday. The plumber told Fox 46 Charlotte he will have to return on Friday to tear up the driveway. For now, he can only determine the leak is under the driveway.

FOX 46 Charlotte reached out to Google Fiber, who released these statements:

“We take all concerns very seriously and are looking into this matter. As we continue to build our Google Fiber network across Charlotte, we’re always working to minimize any disruption. When incidents do occur, we work quickly and closely with the City, other utilities and homeowners to remediate and expedite any disruption."

"Google Fiber alerts residents 72 hours before the start of any construction via a Google Fiber branded door-hanger. We always work to minimize any disruption, and we take complaints very seriously. In this case, we are working with the homeowner to investigate the situation. Because this is an ongoing investigation and no conclusions have been reached, further comment would be premature.”

If it turns out Google Fiber is responsible, Young hopes the situation can be rectified.

“I have no problem paying for my water bill. I’m looking for them to pay for the extra water being used. I’m not looking to make any money off of it, I just want them to pay what’s fair.”

While the jury may be out, FOX 46 Charlotte will be at the Young's on Friday for the verdict. Look for an update on-air and online.
