Man dies after crashing into tree, police say he was speeding


A man driving a 1997 Buick Lesabre is dead after he entered a curve, lost control and struck a tree in southwest Charlotte on Sunday.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say 30-year-old Dennis Okavis Bufford was traveling northbound in the 16300 block of Steele Creek Road near Hamilton Place Drive at 3:30 a.m.  Officials say Bufford was speeding and improperly wearing a seatbelt when he entered a curve, lost control and drove off the right side of the roadway.

Bufford then overcorrected back to the left across the double yellow line. His car went off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree. Medic and fire officials pronounced him dead upon impact at 4:24 a.m. His family has been notified of his death.

Police are still investigating the crash and whether alcohol played a role in the incident.
