Statesville officer in marked patrol car hits, kills pedestrian

- A Statesville police officer was involved in a deadly pedestrian crash near the intersection of S. Center Street and Bell Street in Statesville on Saturday at 12:05 a.m.

State troopers say Sgt. Scott Reed was driving south along U.S. 21 in a marked patrol car when he accidentally struck 59-year-old Jason Cousins, Jr. who was traveling east on U.S. 21.

Cousins was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Iredell County EMS.

Troopers say Cousins was wearing dark clothing, which made it more difficult for Reed to see him.

The speed limit was 35 mph and Reed was driving 30 mph. Troopers say speed is not a factor. They are not anticipating any charges at this time.

Highway Patrol is investigating, but Statesville Police will be in charge for releasing information.
