Thousands flock to Speed Street, few arrests made

- Over 200,000 NASCAR fans and citizens from all across the nation attended the 22nd annual Circle K and Kangaroo Speed Street festival in uptown this year.

The 3-day festival celebrates NASCAR and stock car racing. Crowds could be seen walking along Tryon Street with big turkey legs and sugar-coated funnel cakes in hand.

Fans enjoyed interactive displays, autograph sessions, show cars, NASCAR celebrity appearances and product sampling all throughout the weekend.

But despite all the fun and excitement, the city of Charlotte, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department and the Charlotte Department of Transportation took extra precautions to keep event-goers safe.

Since Speed Street was previously declared an extraordinary event with an expected higher turnout, law enforcement and transportation officials were better prepared to respond to potential incidents and maintain traffic flow.

According to the City of Charlotte, a total of 15 adults and three juveniles were arrested in the center city area during the event.

CMPD released the following Speed Street crime statistics:

•    Affray: 7
•    Disorderly Conduct: 7 (three juveniles)
•    Intoxicated and Disruptive: 2
•    Outstanding Warrant: 1
•    Carrying Concealed Weapon (CCW): 1
