Virginia Drivers Refuse to Surrender Confederate Flag License Plates

It is now illegal to drive with Virginia license plates featuring the Confederate flag, but some citizens plan to defy the ban.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a Democrat, called for the change this summer in the wake of the tragic Charleston church shooting.

About 1,600 Virginians received a warning letter last month informing them that they had until Oct. 4 to exchange their Confederate flag license plates in favor of new tags from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

So far, less than 200 have turned in their plates.
