Detectives want to know what led up to Smith's interaction with a traffic officer on the 400 block of West Morehead Street in Charlotte. Smith was wearing gray sweatpants and a multicolored sweatshirt. The 24 year-old had dwarfism; he was 4'3 and 85 lbs.
Smith was a volunteer counselor at Camp Luck, a one-week camp in the summer at King's Mountain State Park, for kids with heart disease.Dr. Rene Herlong is the medical director of the camp. He says Smith was a good example for the children, able to relate to some of their struggles because he had dwarfism. Dr. Herlong said, "I think he just really wanted to give back. He wanted to be there, be a role model for the kids, show them that people who have medical problems can still participate."
Anyone with information on what may have happened before Smith interacted with police Wednesday is asked to call 704-432-TIPS.
