An 80-year-old grandmother in Clare County, Michigan was jailed for the first time in her life, because she had a small amount of cannabis at home while her medical marijuana card was expired.
According to a FOX 17 report, Delores Saltzman, who lives with arthritis, diverticulitis, muscle and bone aches, said that cannabis saved her life, offering pain relief and an increased appetite after undergoing surgery, with prescription opioids only induced pains and vomiting.
Clare County Sheriff's Deputy Ashley Gruno reportedly came to Salzman's home on June 13 trying to locate her great-granddaughter. Deputy Gruno said she smelled cannabis smoke while standing on the woman's porch and asked to whom it belonged.
FOX 17 reports that Saltzman told the truth, that it was her, and that she smoked the plant for medicinal purposes. Deputy Gruno came inside and ultimately confiscated seven pipes, four joints, and a small amount of cannabis. She then handcuffed the woman, put her in the patrol car, and jailed her overnight. The majoirty of Michigan voters approve of legalizing adult-use of cannabis, and a ballot initiaitive to do exactly that will appear before voters on Election Day this November.
