Big dollars set to come into the Queen City as Charlotte welcomes in the NBA All-Star weekend next week.
Some of the biggest winners will be those that rent out their own place to strangers. A quick search on the website Airbnb shows how NBA All-Star weekend is driving up the prices.
On average if you and a friend are looking to rent out an entire place in the Charlotte area next weekend you're spending close to $700 dollars. In contrast to a regualr weekend in Charlotte prices drop all the way down to just over $200.
If you're on bit of an budget and just want a private room, you and your friend will spend $135 next week. That's in contrast to $68 on a regular weekend.
However, not every host is cashing in. That's where we meet Airbnb host Charmaine Ferguson. Ferguson who started renting out her space to help pay for her breast cancer treatments lives in the Madison Park neighborhood. She's been doing this since July and will admit she wasn't necessarily aware of the value of next week,
"I had a couple book like two months ago and I didn't even know what was happening," said Ferguson.
"I'm not a sports person, I am an arts person. I can tell you all about the operas in town and all of that but not this," she continued.
Though she may be missing out on a few extra bucks next week, she says she just fine charging her usual $49 a night rate.
"I started this because I wanted to give people good value for their money. I am not out to grab every cent that I can and I want to give them a wonderful experience," Ferguson said.
