A crossing guard was hit by a car while directing traffic outside Rocky River Elementary School in Monroe Thursday morning. Kyle Hill is recovering with three broken ribs, a broken collar bone, and a cut on his head.
State Troopers tells Fox46 Charlotte no charges have been filed against the driver of a white pick-up truck. Hill’s family says his injuries could have been a lot worse.
“He was lying flat and you could tell the way his body was positioned that he was in a lot of pain,” said Melissa Robinson. “People were getting out of their cars and rushing to him. It just happened.” Robinson had just approached the school drop off line when she saw Hill lying on the ground and parents rushing to help him.
Wanda Strickfaden saw Hill wave her into the school loop to drop off her nine-year-old son, as he does every morning. But by the time she pulled out of the loop, Hill was hit. “I just saw him. He was in his jumpsuit,” said Strickfaden. “Once I’m exiting the school, I notice the crossing guard isn’t there directing traffic.”
Strickfaden started taking videos on her phone and on Facebook Live, just after seven o’clock in the morning. “The ambulance came, the firetruck came, and they put him on a gurney.”
Hill was rushed to Atrium Hospital in the Dilworth neighborhood of Charlotte. He has worked as the crossing guard outside Rocky River Elementary School since the beginning of the school year.
“He is there every morning, he is kind to all the parents, and he doesn’t deserve this. And we want to make sure that he is taken care of.”
Robinson says a crossing guard has been hit outside the school before: “Last year, it was a janitor who was working as the crossing guard and he was grazed but he wasn’t injured like Mr. Hill was injured. This was serious,” said Robinson.
Parents concerns are growing. While some ask drivers to slow down, others are praying for Hill’s speedy recovery.
“I just think people need to be aware this is a school zone and don’t come flying through here!” said Robinson.
“He has to have more than a jumpsuit,” said Strickfaden. “There should be lights on him, something that allows and attracts cars to know that he is there and to respect what he is doing.”
