"It feels good to be back in uniform": Josh Self returns to work months after family tragedy

- A Gaston County police officer is now back on the job three months after his father drove a car into a restaurant, killing his wife and sister.

Officer Joshua Self was also injured in the attack, but after several months in recovery, he says he's ready to be back at work.

"It feels good to be back in uniform,” Josh said in an Instagram post on his first day back to work at the Gaston County Police Department.

“It's not always been easy, there's a lot of questions that I'll never get answers to,” he said.

Josh's father, former law enforcement officer Roger Self, deliberately drove his Jeep into the Surf and Turf Lodge restaurant in Bessemer City on May 20, according to police. Roger's daughter, Katelyn, and his daughter-in-law, Amanda, were killed.

Josh, his 13-year-old daughter, and his mother, Dianne Self, were injured after the car came crashing into the restaurant.

Three children in the family, including Josh's two kids, witnessed the horror.

“That's where I start getting a little emotional when I start talking about them and all the stuff that they've been through and what they're going to continue to go through for the rest of their life now,” Josh said.

He’s focused on staying strong for his kids, and keeping his wife's memory alive, as he works to raise his children without her.

“I thought that that was important for them to see dad going back to work and once again, taking care of them financially. I think that's what kids need to see is a hard working dad.”
