SALISBURY, NC (FOX 46) - Livingstone College was placed on temporary lockdown early Sunday morning after several hundred students and visitors were causing a scene on campus, according to Salisbury police. One person was arrested during the incident.
Officers said just after midnight Sunday, October 16 they responded for a third time to the campus after reports of civil unrest.
Based on the fighting and behavior of the large crowd, Livingstone College Police and Rowan Sheriff’s Office responded to help, Salisbury police said.
In response to growing confrontations with officers and fighting by some members of the groups, police said chemical agents were used to disperse the crowd and to move them from the area.
Officers said the use of chemical agents was effective disbursing those who were being disorderly and confrontational.
In response to the situation, the Livingstone College Police Chief placed the campus on lockdown for the remainder of the night.
It is unclear what caused the disturbance.
