100-year-old gym goer says exercise is one secret to her good health

- Jessie Rhyne, who just turned 100, is a walking advertisement for her Gaston County YMCA.

“Working out makes you feel better and keeps you going,” she said.

You’ll find her at least twice a week taking a workout class at the Robert Lee Stowe Jr. location.

Her granddaughter, Rebecca Hope, takes her to the gym.

“It’s very rewarding because she just does so well every day. Every year, that she turns one year older, we’re just amazed because she doesn’t seem to slow down, she just keeps on going,” Hope said.

Jessie said exercising is one reason for her good health and that fellowship with other people at the gym is another factor.

YMCA management said everybody looks forwarding to seeing Jessie.

“Miss Jessie has been coming to our YMCA for years now. She comes faithfully to do her senior classes,” said District Executive Director, Susan Mosk. “She is an inspiration, not just to me but to everyone here at the YMCA. Jessie is a prime example of stay health, stay active and you will always be healthy.”

When Jessie is not at the gym she cooks, keep her house tidy and plays bridge.

Her morning workouts are just the start of her day.

“I was just telling my kids today how lucky we are, that she is 100 and she gets along.” Hope said. “There are some people who are even in their 60s or 70s that don’t do as good as she does, so we’re very fortunate.”
