Woman struck, killed on West Sugar Creek Rd.

- Charlotte-Mecklenburg police responded to a major car crash that killed a female pedestrian.

The crash occurred at 7:22 p.m. Wednesday, March 9 along the 600 block of W. Sugar Creek Road at Rutgers Avenue.

Detectives determined that the driver, identified as Moises Guzman, was traveling along W. Sugar Creek Road in the left lane, when he saw the woman run in front of his vehicle.

Guzman told police he swerved to the right in an attempt to avoid striking her. Guzman’s vehicle struck Kameka Collins with his right front bumper.

Medic pronounced Collins dead on scene.

According to police, Collins was crossing W. Sugar Creek Road at a non-marked pedestrian crossing and was wearing dark clothing at the time of the crash. They said this portion of W. Sugar Creek Road is illuminated with street lights. Collins was reportedly crossing north to south.

Speed and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in this crash, police say. No word on charges.

Anyone with further information is asked to contact Detective S. Williams with the CMPD Major Crash Investigation Unit at 704-432-2169 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
