Belmont, NC - On Friday people who live near the Duke Energy plant in Belmont received a note telling them they can now drink their water.
About a year ago, people who live in the area received another note telling them they should not be drinking the water out of their wells because of high levels of chemicals that could cause health risks.
The notice changed the way they lived their lives, neighbors say they have to boil their water or use bottled water for nearly everything they do.
Now, the state says they can begin to drink their water again after an extensive study, but neighbors say they will still live in fear, until more is done.
We reached out to duke energy who said in a statement:
"It’s unfortunate that neighbors have received so much confusing information, but science has consistently shown that ash basins have not influenced neighbors’ wells. Water in these wells is just as safe or better than the public water supplies millions of people rely on across the nation. We remain focused on closing ash basins in ways that put safety first, protect the environment, minimize impact to communities and manage costs.
