LINCOLN CO., NC (WJZY) - A rash of hard to detect counterfeit $100 bills is turning up in the area, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.
On March 18, 2016, deputies responded to Rite Aid Pharmacy at 108 South NC 16 Business in connection with an individual who purchased two $500 gift cards with ten counterfeit $100 bills.
The man was described as a white male, with a beard, navy shirt, and cargo pants and used a cane to assist with walking.
Deputies located the man at a nearby fast food restaurant and took him in custody. Deputies recovered the two $500 gift cards and two receipts from Rite-Aid.
Detectives collected the counterfeit money passed at Rite-Aid and eleven $100 bills that the suspect still had in his possession. They said all of the bills had different serial numbers.
Earlier, they said the man went to Walgreen’s at 7385 NC 73 where he also attempted to purchase gift cards using the counterfeit money. Management at that location had received emails from other Walgreen locations in Belmont, Shelby and the Union Road store in Gastonia with information regarding the description of the same man purchasing merchandise with counterfeit money.
The manager called 911 when he saw it was the same man that was in his store. The man left walking south on Business Highway 16.
Dannie Ray Pope, 40, who list his address as Homeless, Charlotte, NC, was arrested on two felony counts of Obtaining Property by False Pretenses, one felony count of Attempt to Obtain Property by False Pretenses and one felony count of Possession of 5+ Counterfeit Instruments.
He was placed in the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center under a $25,000 secured bond.
Detectives contacted several other area agencies and discovered the suspect was on surveillance video in Shelby using the counterfeit money to purchase gift cards on March 13, 2016.
Captain Tim Johnson said, “It is the best counterfeit money I have seen.”
