Anthony Foxx reacts to new LGBT law

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, also a former Charlotte mayor, came to the Queen City on Tuesday to present to the Rotary Club of Charlotte.

While talking with media, he says he faced many challenges as Charlotte mayor, but what's playing out now with House Bill 2 is something he never imagined.

"As a North Carolinian, it pains me to see our state going through this, because it's entirely avoidable and unnecessary,” Foxx said.

He says House Bill 2 is gaining a national spotlight and sparking backlash about LGBT rights.

"Who someone loves shouldn't be an issue. And it's incredibly hard for me to watch what's happening in North Carolina,” Foxx said.

The Transportation Secretary points out that his department is looking into if the new law will impact the state's federal transportation dollars.

"We're actually reviewing the statute now and taking a look at whether our programs are implicated and whether there is a potential loss of federal funding to North Carolina,” he adds.

Foxx believes the law has become a distraction when there are other problems to tackle in charlotte…

"We got kids who aren't making progress in schools. Why don't we focus on bridges that need to be repaired,” he said.
