CHARLOTTE, NC (WJZY) - A Charlotte woman is inspiring others by publicly sharing her own story of growing up in a home with two moms.
Lyndsey Cooper took to Facebook Sunday posting a video that has since been viewed thousands of times. FOX 46 sat down with Cooper and her parents Wednesday.
Cooper grew up in the Queen City in what some may call an untraditional household. But she said for her, childhood was everything but abnormal.
Her message was simple, but it's having a profound effect on social media.
"I've gotten Facebook messages from completely random people, who are two moms raising their own daughters saying thank you for posting this message," Cooper said.
It's a message Cooper decided to share with the world Sunday after being asked by a student at Appalachian State University, her Alma Mater, to record a video talking about life growing up with two moms.
"It turned out pretty funny and interesting. And I sent it to my parents and asked them if I could post it online, and they were like, 'yeah, of course, sure'," Cooper said.
Lyndsay's parents, Leah Cooper and Wendy Laxton, said they've never had to encourage Lyndsay to find her voice - she's always been very open with her feelings and beliefs.
"Always very passionate about what she believes in. So it was...I don't know, it was a little different to have her this time be passionate about us," Laxton said.
Cooper said having two moms was never something she ever felt she had to share, that is until now.
"I think that these days everyone's trying to push an agenda and make a big statement. But I kind of wanted to make an anti-statement by just posting something so normal and so real," she said.
Cooper's video has been so relatable, which is why she feels the response has so far been nothing but positive.
"Hopefully other kids can see that they can grow up and live a normal life too with two moms," she said.
Cooper's video has so far been viewed more than 20,000 times. She said she hopes to continue inspiring people through her personal experiences.
