CHARLOTTE, NC (WJZY) - Beverly Newell, a relator, and Kelly Trent, a registered nurse, say they were reportedly denied service by a fertility clinic because they are both women.
The couple believes the cancelation is directly related to House Bill 2.
It’s a process they have been working through since February, a chance to start their own family. On April 1, 2016 a call from the clinic they were hoping to use, changed their plan.
"When I asked for clarification she said we are not accepting same sex couples because we are a busy practice," Kelly Trent said.
The couple did not wish to release the name of the clinic they had been working with.
Newell and Trent have now joined a lawsuit with the American Civil Liberties Union, calling on the state to repeal the bill.
"It took away the right for us to file a complaint in regards to the treatment that we got at this clinic, so in a way it encourages the behavior for people to be discriminated against," Beverly Newell said.
The couple is planning to continue fertility treatments with a different clinic.
