130 affordable housing units open in honor of Charlotte civic leader

- 130 deserving families will now have an affordable place to live on Charlotte's north side.

The new Stevenson Apartments at Brightwalk will make a difference for hundreds of citizens in our community.

The new units are becoming part of a mixed income community. The goal is to provide safe, high quality, affordable housing to deserving families.

The new units are named after civic leader and political trailblazer Sarah Stevenson.

"Words cannot express what this means to me," she said.

"We are in a city rapidly developing," said North Carolina Democratic Representative Alma Adams.  "Demand for housing is exceeding the supply -- and the price has increased tremendously."

A two bedroom apartment at the Stevenson Apartments will run around $755 a month.  A three bedroom will run around $870 a month.  Water, sewer and trash are all included.

"Providing affordable housing in Charlotte right now is so needed," said The Housing Partnership President Julie Porter.  "And we have such a shortage--  that bringing 130 units on the market is an incredible opportunity."

At today's celebration, the Housing Partnership announced it will give every resident at the Stevenson Apartments a laptop computer.

There is a waiting list, but applications are always being accepted.
