911 calls released in deadly Boone plane crash

- The 911 calls made in a deadly Boone plan crash have been released.

Police have identified the three people involved in the plane crash Monday near a golf course in Boone.

Benjamin (Ben) Franklin Chappell, 69, of Boone was pronounced dead on scene. John Field Worsley II, 68, of Lenoir and Steven Cox Berry, 43, of Banner Elk, were transported to the hospital.

Both Worsley and Berry remain in critical condition at Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem.

Police said Ben Chappell was a retired State Trooper of the NC State Highway Patrol, stationed in Watauga County. Police told FOX 46 Chappell was a friend to many in the community.

The family told FOX 46 Chappell was a passenger on the plane when it crashed.

The crash happened around 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 25 in the vicinity of Boone Golf Club.

Police said the single-engine plane was coming from Boone Airport. It is unknown where the plane was headed. Witnesses described the plane as 'being in distress' and it was 'having trouble' at the moment of take-off.

The plane clipped the tops of some trees before it crashed on the golf course. Two witnesses turned into rescuers and were able to help two people from the plane crash, police said.

The Federal Aviation Administration has been on the scene since Monday afternoon. Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board are expected to begin their investigation Tuesday morning.

Police said it's been at least seven years since a plane crash occurred in the area.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic event.  Everyone in law enforcement in Watauga County knows Ben Chappell and his family.  It is difficult to have to work a scene where all of us know at least one of the victims.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the Chappell family at this time.  We also want to wish the very best to Mr. Worsley and Mr. Berry and are praying for a speedy recovery for them and for the comfort of their families.”  - Chief of Police Dana Crawford
