CHARLOTTE, NC (WJZY) - The suspect involved in the deadly hit-and-run of a 6-year-old turned himself in to police on Sunday, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
Police identified the suspect as Juan Antonio Quintanilla-Garza, 32, and obtained a warrant for felony hit-and-run.
On Sunday, May 1, 2016 Quintanilla-Garza turned himself in to the Webb County Sheriff's Office in Texas. The extradition process will begin immediately, but there is no current timetable on Quintanilla-Garza's return to Mecklenburg County.
On April 26, CMPD detectives were notified by the Mint Hill Police Department that they had received a tip that a vehicle matching the description of the wanted van was located in the 9800 block of Idlewild Road.
Detectives responded to the scene and confirmed that it was the suspect vehicle.
Police said Anthony Santos Castellon-Rivera was hit by a car and killed in the 1300 block of Eastway Drive around 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
Officers said Castellon-Rivera and his family were attempting to cross the street when a white work van with a ladder rack on top fatally struck the boy.
Witnesses said the van came to a stop, the driver got out of the van and then re-entered the van and drove off.
Castellon-Rivera's funeral will be held at 12 p.m. May 8, 2016 at Gethsemane Cemetery off Sugar Creek Road in Charlotte.
