Shots fired in Ballantyne area

- Neighbors in the Ballantyne area say they were jolted awake last night by the sound of gunfire for the second time in two weeks.

They say the noise came from a wooded area near the Blakeney shopping center.

"It was pop, pop, pop, pop. Then 30 seconds, and then pop, pop, pop, pop again and that was it," said Jim Dulin, who lives in the Ardrey neighborhood.

Dulin says he's lived there for eight years and he's never heard anything like this.

"It’s scary being that close to your house," Dulin said.

Missy Spiers says she also heard the shots from her bedroom window and called police.

"When I looked at my phone, I called 911 at 2:51am. There were probably 6 cop cars out there,” said Spiers.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to the call. They told Fox 46 Charlotte that officers stopped a van with three people inside who admitted to firing weapons. But they were not arrested and no charges were filed. According to both CMPD and Union County Sheriff's Office, the shooters legally possessed the guns and were in a legal area to shoot, namely, unincorporated Union County. But that's not exactly comforting to people living nearby.

"It’s paralyzing because you don't think that's going to be in your backyard," Spiers said.

The CMPD officer who patrols this area says tells Fox 46 Charlotte that he will be following up with the shooters and looking into their backgrounds.

It’s unclear what if anything can be done if they return to fire weapons in the middle of the night.
