Homeless woman, daughter struggle with finding permanent housing in Charlotte

- A mother and daughter lived in their broken-down car for 207 days, but after FOX 46 Charlotte took action they were presented with a new working car.

Now, we're helping them to find a place to live.

FOX 46 Charlotte presented a new car to the homeless family on Friday. Barbara Gregory and her daughter Teresa Kramer lived in a broken down car for seven months after Teresa lost her job and their rent went up.

Brandon Reeves Auto World gave the two women a new car and put them up at a hotel for the weekend. Then, Hampton Inn pitched in another night for free.

"To get some sleep without having to worry about your safety was really great," Teresa said.

Now, 70-year-old Barbara and 43-year-old Teresa are looking for an extended stay hotel until they find something more permanent - as well as a place to work.

The women said they had no luck with the City, County and non-profit organizations because they didn't qualify.

"Most of the organizations that we contacted were unable to help because their programs are designed for specific people. If you're recovering from an addiction, a domestic violence survivor, if you're disabled. We didn't fit those categories, so they were unable to offer any support."

A Mecklenburg County community support worker told FOX 46 Charlotte the family was offered help with subsidized housing, but turned it down.

The family, on the other hand, believed they would be on a waiting list for one year.

"The Salvation Army was the only shelter in Charlotte for women that we could go to. We went for one night because we were harassed, physically threatened. We were there for less than 24 hours. It was not a safe environment to be in. We felt we would be safer in the car," Teresa said.

FOX 46 Charlotte is taking action to find housing for Barbara and Teresa - but we need your help!
