Independence Blvd. construction will last longer than expected

- Construction on Independence Boulevard has a revised completion date of summer 2017 after the initial completion date was set for mid-October 2016.

The project's replacement contractor proposed this date and NCDOT is working with the contractor to figure out a way to speed up the construction.

Lane Construction began working on Independence Boulevard in April after DeVere Construction walked off the job in January because they said NCDOT owed them money.

NCDOT responded with the following to DeVere Construction:

"Our focus is on completion of all projects in a timely, satisfactory manner and reducing the impact to the traveling public. We hold a contractor like DeVere Construction responsible for helping us achieve that goal by doing the required work under the schedule specified in its contract with the department. And there can be financial consequences if the company fails to meet its contracted obligations. In 2014, DeVere Construction was barred from bidding on any future NCDOT projects in an effort to allow the company to focus on and complete its current projects."

NCDOT said they will work with Lane to have the Sharon Amity and Idlewild Road interchanges completed by the end of this year. They’ll also work to have traffic shifted at the end of the project by the end of this year, which will allow work in the median at this location.

NCDOT said they can begin withholding liquidated damages in mid-October, the initial completion date.
