Richmond Co. physician arrested on drug charges

- Rockingham PD and SBI arrested a Richmond Co. Medical Doctor earlier Thursday on drug charges.

The arrest came after a three month investigating that began after information was received about the doctor's dispensing practices, according to authorities.

Wendell Dalton Wells, 70, was charged with with one count of sale/delivery of a schedule II controlled substance, one count of sale/delivery of a schedule IV controlled substance, two counts of prescribing a controlled substance without a legitimate medical purpose and one count of failure to keep medical records.

He was also charged with three individual counts of misdemeanor sexual battery, which stemmed from the improper touching of a patient.

Authorities say initial allegations provided that Wells had authorized prescriptions for controlled substances without a legitimate medical purpose and without meaningful patient examinations being conducted.

The controlled substances involved were Alprazolam and Hydrocodone.

He was a licensed doctor who practiced at First Choice Medical Chiropractor in Rockingham.

Wells was given a $25,000 secured bond and released from the Richmond County Jail.

He surrendered his NC Medical License and his DEA Registration.
