FOX 46 Charlotte received a tip about an offensive and hate-filled post on the Airbnb website from a man who refused to rent his Charlotte apartment to a black graduate student.
After some investigating we got results for the victim.
An apartment near Uptown, walking distance to all the sights and sounds the Queen City has to offer. It's just what one young lady needed in her search for temporary housing in Charlotte while on a business trip.
She went on Airbnb, a website designed to help people rent and find lodging in cities all across the country.
But once she started communicating with the host of one apartment at 135 W. Morehead Street - things took a turn for the worse.
A man by the name of Tom Warner, a white man from Spartanburg, SC, began berating her, an African American woman, via the chat message system on Airbnb.
He said, "I hate N***** expletive. So I'm going to cancel you. This is the South darling, find another place to rest your N*****expletive head."
FOX 46 Charlotte decided to take action and get results after the blog was originally posted on the blogger website, overeducated.com.
We reached out to Airbnb about the host and they quickly responded, stating they would look into it. Shortly after, they got back to us with this statement:
"We were horrified when we read these messages. The language and conduct are unacceptable and violate both our policies and everything we believe in. This host has been removed from Airbnb and we've reached out to the guest to offer our full and complete support, including ensuring the guest has a safe place to stay. Racial discrimination is unacceptable and it flies in the face of our mission to bring people together."
FOX 46 Charlotte called the number associated with the host, Todd Warner. Another man answered the phone stating he just got this phone number Wednesday and has been inundated with phone calls since then - with people asking if he is the man who posted on Airbnb.
