Special needs student allegedly assaulted by behavioral treatment center employee

- A special needs student was allegedly assaulted by an employee at her behavioral treatment center.

Authorities told FOX 46 Charlotte that woman is now a former employee - and she's facing assault charges.

6-year-old Greenlee Bowen loves flowers and her dad's tomato plants. Her mom, Kennie Bowen, said her daughter used to go to Alexander Youth Network in Shelby, a treatment center for children with serious emotional and behavior problems.

Bowen said she filed a police report in late April after her daughter came home with bruises on her body. She provided FOX 46 Charlotte with a photo, showing one of the marks on the girl's back.

Cherral Moore, a former employee of the Children's Behavioral Healthcare Center, has now been charged with assault on a child under 12 and assault on a handicapped person.

FOX 46 Charlotte went by Moore's apartment to ask her about the charges. We were promptly told "no comment," and that she "has a lawyer."

FOX 46 Charlotte checked in with Alexander Youth Network. We wanted to know whether they had filed a police report, and what their policy is, on physical discipline.

We received the following statement:

“Ms. Moore is no longer employed at Alexander Youth Network. We cannot provide additional details because it is a personnel matter. We understand that there is a judicial proceeding regarding Ms. Moore.

Though we are not commenting on the on-going criminal matter, Alexander Youth Network's policy does not allow or tolerate corporal punishment.

We have fully cooperated with law enforcement and will let the judicial process resolve whatever issues remain.”

The Cleveland County Sheriff's Office refused to provide FOX 46 Charlotte with the full police report, which would include more details about the assault.

Moore's trial date is set for June 30, 2016.

For Greenlee's mom, this is about protecting children, who can't always speak for themselves.
