Driver charged in fatal motorcylce crash on Independence Blvd.

- Charlotte-Mecklenburg police responded to a fatal accident on Independence Blvd. early Wednesday morning that shut down the outbound lanes.

Officers arrived on scene at the 1200 block of East Independence Boulevard near the intersection of Charlottetowne Avenue around 2:25 a.m. Wednesday, June 8, and found a woman in the roadway deceased.

William Anthony Short was driving a 2016 Cam Am Spyder Motorcycle heading east on Independence Boulevard with Traci Elizabeth Gagnon at a high rate of speed behind another unknown make sport motorcycle, according to CMPD.

The motorcycle hit a vehicle in the rear, causing Short to lose control. CMPD said the motorcycle began to skid and both Short and Gagnon were ejected from the motorcycle.

The motorcycle continued traveling and hit a concrete barrier several times before stopping.

Medic responded and pronounced Gagnon deceased from the injuries she sustained during the crash.

Short was taken to CMC with non-life threatening injuries. Once released from the hospital he was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter, felony death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired and no motorcycle endorsement.

CMPD said alcohol use and excessive speed are contributing factors in this crash.
