Police: Lake Wylie swimmer had been drinking before disappearing under the water

- The body of the missing swimmer on Lake Wiley was recovered just after 1 p.m. Thursday, June 9.

As the missing man's family copes with the news, FOX 46 Charlotte also uncovered what occurred on the lake moments before he disappeared.

After calling off the search late Wednesday, the body of Conroy Oliver, 30, was found Thursday afternoon. Those out on the lake with Oliver for a day of fun told investigators Oliver jumped off the boat into Lake Wylie to go swimming.

Moments later his friends noticed he was struggling. That's when they said they threw in a life jacket and then a rope. When those didn't work his friends jumped in, but were too late.

Oliver had disappeared under the water.

"Throwing the life ring, throwing a vest is the right thing to do. It's unfortunate he didn't get to it."

Police paperwork now indicates Oliver had been drinking, which may have impaired his swimming ability.

Paul Skinner from the Carolina Boat Club told FOX 46 Charlotte they received many calls about the missing swimmer, and thought he may have gone missing from one of their pontoon boats.

"Had a lot of phone calls yesterday. They worry about us. You know, is everybody there OK. You know it's a sad thing to hear to see," Skinner said.

"There's no words to say sorry for the loss. It's heartbreaking. At least people tried to help him but I feel so sorry for the family."

FOX 46 Charlotte spoke to Oliver's aunt briefly, who said Oliver was a good kid and would always make people laugh, and would most definitely be missed.
