12-year-old girl flown to hospital after sustaining burns in vehicle fire

- Tikeira Fobb describes what she saw as heavy smoke and fire engulf her family’s car.

“My little sister was running around the cul-de-sac running around saying 'I’m burning, I’m burning,'" Tikeira Fobbs said.

She watched her 12-year-old sister Airez Fobbs scream in pain as the fire burned her skin. She was immediately flown to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center's Burn Unit.

Fire investigators tell FOX 46 Charlotte, Airez Fobbs was playing with a lighter inside the car, not knowing her family had spilled a small amount of gas from a container they had just purchased.

That  - combined with Monday’s heat was enough to spark the blaze.

That's when Fobb jumped out of the car screaming and neighbors came out to see what was happening.

"We could see burns on her arms and all over her legs and her face and all she could say was 'I’m burning' and we were just trying to figure out how to help her and the car just continue to burn," Tikeira Fobbs said.

The car was parked so close to the house, it burned the siding. Everyone nearby thought the car was moments away from exploding but the Rock Hill Fire Department put the fire out.

The whole family made it out safely and told FOX 46 Charlotte that even with Airez burned over 50-percent of her body, she was the one asking if everyone was okay.

"I did get one chance to talk to her in the ambulance and she was just telling us that she loved us and that she wanted everybody to be OK and that she just, she was just really upset about the whole situation and it's hard you know being here and not having her around but I know she's going to pull through and she's going to be," Tikeira Fobbs said.

One day after the accident, Tikeira describes her little sister as a true hero and a fighter through and through.

"She's honestly my hero at this point because I’ve never seen anyone as brave as her. I don't know if I would've been able to do it. As burned as she was and then her walking around an anything," Tikeira Fobbs said.

The Fobbs family told FOX 46 Charlotte Airez is currently being sedated and will go into surgery on Thursday.
