Police release name of carjacking suspect killed in crash in north Charlotte

- UPDATE (5:10 p.m. 6/16/2016): Authorities have identified the driver, who died following a police chase related to a carjacking Thursday morning in north Charlotte, 18-year-old Kahmal Williams Darby. 

It all started about 5 a.m. at the 5700 block of Bradford Lake Lane when a man approached the driver of a 2006 Volvo, pulled a knife, forced the driver out of the car and took off, according to police.

Ricky Darnell Jones, 49, of Charlotte, told police the incident occurred in the driveway of his home along Bradford Lake Lane.

Shortly after 9 a.m. Metro Officers said they located the stolen vehicle on N. Tryon Street and attempted to pull the vehicle over. The driver then took off at a high rate of speed, made a left turn on W. Sugar Creek Road and continued to speed away from officers. Police said the stolen vehicle lost control and ran off the right side of the road striking a utility pole before coming to rest in a parking lot.

Darby was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash closed W. Sugar Creek Road for several hours between Hidden Valley and Reagan Drive.

UPDATE (12 p.m. 6/16/2016): Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police is investigating after a carjacking turned into a fatal crash Thursday morning along Sugar Creek Road.

It all started about 5 a.m. when a man approached the driver of a 2006 Volvo, pulled a knife, forced the driver out of the car and took off, according to police.

Shortly after 9 a.m. Metro Officers said they located the stolen vehicle when it turned onto Sugar Creek Road. From there, officers said they began a quick car chase, which resulted in a crash and the death of the suspect.

No other injuries or vehicles were involved, police said.

The suspect’s identity was not immediately released.

Officers advised that W. Sugar Creek Road is expected to be closed for several hours between Hidden Valley and Reagan Drive.

The accident was reported about 9 a.m. between Hidden Valley and Reagan Drive.

According to CMPD, it started as a carjacking and turned into a police chase.

The name of the victim was not immediately released.
