Authorities rule electrical failure as cause of tour bus fire in Hickory, NC

- Authorities are ruling the cause of a fire that damaged a tour bus Friday morning behind the Crossing at Hollar Mill to be electrical.

The bus was located on the 800 block of Highland Avenue SE when it caught fire about 9 a.m.

The bus belongs to the band, Elephant Revival, who is scheduled to play at Hollar Mill Friday night, according to firefighters.

The band was sleeping on the bus when they woke up to flames inside their bus. The band said it lost most of its instruments in the fire

None of the band members were injured.

The band was still able to perform its concert, however, borrowing equipment from opening band Forlorn Strangers.

"Moments like these are opportunities for us to realize how fragile and precious life is and how it can change in an instant," fiddle player Bridget Law. "It's super important to be as grateful as you possibly can be all the time and cherish your loved ones."

Hickory Fire Prevention released the following:

At 08:57 Friday morning, Hickory firefighters responded to a vehicle fire located at 800 block of Highland Avenue (behind Hollar Mills.)  Initial reports indicated that people were possibly still inside.  Once on the scene, firefighters reported smoke coming from a tour bus and the five occupants safely outside.  Since the bus was located close to a building, additional fire units responded to assist with the incident.   

Hickory firefighters responded with 2 engines, 1 ladder truck, 1 rescue truck, and 2 command units. 

Damages were confined to the bus and contents.  The tour bus was occupied by members of the Elephant Revival band who are scheduled to play at the Crossing at Hollar Mills on Friday night.   

No injuries were reported and damages were considered major.  The Red Cross responded to the scene to assist the occupants of the bus.     

Fire investigators determined the cause of the fire was electrical failure.

Fire officials say two engines, one ladder truck and a rescue vehicle responded.

None of the band members were injured and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
