CHARLOTTE, NC (WJZY) - One local neighborhood is filled with plenty of pet lovers - it only makes sense that an animal hospital is within walking distance.
But now confusion over a lease agreement is forcing one animal hospital to move.
Doctor Oona Gayle wanted to be a veterinarian since she was a little girl.
"I'm allergic to dogs and cats, but it's what I wanted to do so I am doing it anyway," she explained.
In 2010, her dream became a reality after finding space for her own clinic in the NODA neighborhood.
"I was really set on this space. So I kept coming back to this space and finally they said OK. We would like a vet hospital," she said.
$350,000 later, and a lot of hard labor personalizing the space, the NODA Animal Hospital opened in August 2011.
The five-year lease was set to expire this August. Doctor Gayle has intentions of staying another five years until she received an email in May, stating she had to be out by July 30.
The reason - she didn't give 180 days advanced notice to the owner she wanted to stay.
"I said I never received anything from you guys stating that I need to let you know, and they said well it was in the contract," Gayle said.
Doctor Gayle had her lawyer look over the contract and admits she may have missed the fine print.
"First time business owner and so there are lots of mistakes...they are lots of things I didn't know that I am learning along the way," she said.
Her frustration now - she has to move within a matter of weeks and the landlord won't budge or compromise.
"This is exactly how I wanted the space to look and then for them to tell me 'oh you missed your deadline and we need you to leave.' It's really hard," she said.
FOX 46 Charlotte took action, calling and emailing the landlord late Tuesday to see if any extra time could be given, but didn't hear back.
In the meantime, neighbors in NODA are offering help.
"They have come together. They are going to help me find a space. They are going to help me move," Gayle explained.
Doctor Gayle said she is looking at a new space Wednesday, but even if she likes it, there still may be weeks of build-out and permits to wait on.
