Carowinds issues statement after July 4th disruption

- Carowinds released a statement after people on social media said a group of teens staged a fake shooting and were throwing tables Monday night.

The York County Sheriff's Office said Carowinds had reports of shots fired inside the park Monday night, July 4th.

The sheriff's office said the calls were false, but they did cause panic at the park.

There were a group of teens causing a disturbance in Harmony Hall where a bench fell over, according to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office said social media posts said the tables were being thrown over, but say that was not the case.

The sheriff's office said, "There was ZERO credible evidence of shots fired or any weapons found inside the park."

Carowinds made the following statement after the incident:

At approximately 9 p.m. Monday evening, a group of teenagers caused a disruption inside of Harmony Hall. Park security and local law enforcement agencies immediately responded and were able to identify the teenagers involved.  The individuals were eventually detained and released to the care of their parents. The safety and well-being of our guests and associates is our highest priority.

The sheriff's office said the parking lot was clear at 12:03 a.m. and there was one  arrest on Carowinds Blvd. for an assault at the Kangaroo gas station, but Carowinds said this has nothing to do with the park.

There was one vehicle accident in the parking lot, one accident on I-77 and two accidents on Carowinds Blvd. The SC Highway Patrol made one arrest for DUI and they are investigating the other accidents, according to the sheriff's office.
