Power outages forcing people to leave their home

- Many people in the Charlotte area were still in the dark Sunday night, without any air conditioning, after severe storms rolled through the area Friday night.

Sunday afternoon, the sounds of chainsaws echoed through Alma Court in Northwest Charlotte. It would otherwise be a quiet summer afternoon, but this day there was a flurry of activity not only to restore power, but remove trees from two different homes. One home was virtually crushed by a large tree.

Across town in the Merry Oaks neighborhood Bernie Morrell packed his car with luggage and coolers full of food. His family will spend a third night in a hotel.

"The power went out about 8:30 and we were on the other side of town having dinner. So when we came back and had no power and the house was hot we decided to bail and go to the residence inn near the Southpark Mall."

He just moved to the neighborhood two weeks ago, never expecting his street would be the focus for power crews.

"I thought it would only be out for a day because everyone says it comes back on so quick," said Morrell.

But Duke Energy says crews are facing challenges, including dozens of trees still blocking the street. On Kendall Drive, the repair wasn't so easy for crews on Sunday afternoon.

"With this outage here we had a tree fall down onto the power lines and it also damaged the equipment which caused our infrastructure to be damaged and an outage for these customers," said Meghan Musgrave from Duke Energy.

Power was restored along Kendall Drive on Sunday afternoon.

As for Bernie Morrell, he may be in the dark until Monday, more than 72 hours without power.

"We lived in Connecticut when Sandy came through and we were without power for 8 days, but we had a generator and so we are seriously considering the generator route again," said Morrell.

Although the outage numbers have dropped drastically in Mecklenburg County, Duke Energy says some customers may be in the dark until 11:45 Monday night.
