CMPD officers play sports, donate basketball hoop to neighborhood kids

- A simple surprise for kids living in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood of Charlotte has parents and neighbors thanking CMPD and other first responders.

On Saturday, CMPD officer Chelsea Kidder and other officers delivered a brand new basketball hoop. Officers who patrol the area say they often stop to play one-on-one with the youngsters, but the old hoop had seen better days. It often fell to the ground and had dents in the rim.

The new hoop was donated by Wal-Mart. Officers also brought along free pizza and bookbags, donated from Elevation Church, for each kid as they head back to school.

Charlotte firefighters helped put the hoop together and then cooled the kids down with a sprinkler from a fire hydrant. Parents and neighbors in the area are thankful for the extra mile by these first responders.

Kids in the neighborhood also went home with new basketballs, jump rope and Frisbees.

CMPD officers say they want kids to realize that first responders are approachable and aren't always in the neighborhood when something bad happens.
