CLEVELAND COUNTY, NC (WJZY) - Following in the footsteps of their law enforcement brethren, a volunteer fire department in Grover is adding “In God We Trust” decals to every one of its vehicles.
Less than a year ago decals were placed on the back of the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office patrol cars. Less than two weeks ago, VFD #3 in Cleveland County followed suit and places the words on their engines.
Billy Boone, a 28 year veteran and department chaplain said all volunteers were on board.
“It was unanimously voted on by the members of our department which our men of faith. They may not be regular church attenders, but they are men of faith,” Boone said. “We have someone to trust in to look over us, bring us back home safely to our families and so ‘In God We Trust’ is a statement we believe in.”
At the Shelby Café, they were all for the addition.
“The United States was founded In God We Trust,” said Mike Royster, a patron. “I think if you are an American, it shouldn’t offend you. Because if you are Jewish or if you are Asaad, it doesn’t matter to me what you put on your vehicle.”
“I have no problem at all with In God We Trust because that is the way I have been raised,” said Linda Quinlan, who just moved to the area from the Mid-west.
Four simple words and no matter what they mean to others outside the building, it’s clear that to the men and women who risk their lives as volunteers, those words mean everything.
