"Not in our backyard": Dozens protest 8-story development near Lake Norman

- There's a lot of questions in Cornelius and controversy surrounding what's being proposed to go behind and above a certain tree line off West Catawba Avenue.

"Can anyone explain, who is going to benefit from this?"

People in Cornelius are speaking out against rezoning that would allow an eight-story hotel to be built right off Lake Norman.

"There's nothing in the town right now that's higher than three or four stories."

They said it's not what their town is about.

"I don't think so, it's a residential area."

The hotel would go right in the middle of neighborhoods surrounding the lake and include 300 hotel rooms.

"And Cornelius touts itself as a small, family community on the lake and to do this kind of project in the middle of a residential area, doesn't speak too well on what the town is supposed to be."

The attorney for the land owner believes the hotel has its advantages.

"It would bring a lot of tax dollars to the town and it would also provide some waterfront activity to the public."

But just about everyone around the site said not in their backyard.

"Everybody raise their hand who wants this project."
