Autopsy results reveal cause of death for East Lincoln firefighter who collapsed and died while exercising at a middle school in June.
The autopsy results showed Joshua Warren died of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, an enlarged heart with asymmetrical thickening of the walls. This is genetic and relatives are advised to notify their doctors.
A summary of the report said, "The interventricular septum intruded more than 50% into left ventricular outflow track. The thickening of the interventricular septum (the wall in the center of the heart) was more pronounced (2.5 cm) and had scattered areas of fibrosis (scarring) with intramural arteriolar thickening. Histologic examination of the heart tissue revealed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which can be hereditary. Toxicologic analysis of postmortem blood and urine were negative."
The incident happened on Thursday, June 16, at 11 a.m. at East Lincoln Middle School. Warren, 34, was rushed to CHS-Lincoln Medical Center with serious injuries and later died.
Warren was an active member of East Lincoln Fire Department since 2013. In addition, he worked part-time as a firefighter for both the Alexis Fire Department and Lucia-Riverbend Fire Department. He leaves behind a wife and two children, a boy, age 8 and a girl, age 4.
