CHARLOTTE, NC (WJZY) - It’s back to school time! That means grab your check lists…and your check books.
FOX 46 Charlotte hit the school supplies aisles to see what it costs to send your child back to school. We took two school supplies lists from two different CMS schools and rang up the calculators, folders, notebook, and pencils - not mechanical - just as the lists specified.
One elementary school supplies list totaled $79, while the other school’s list rang up at just over $100.
"Thank goodness it’s so cheap," Ed Murano said.
And what’s the most expensive grade to buy for?
On average, 5th graders cost $102. Second grade came in second at $85, kindergarten $83, 3rd grade $81, and 4th and 1st graders tied at $79.
"Oh well… my kindergartner is going to be a little short," Princess Houghton told FOX 46 Charlotte.
Houghton said her son’s school supply list requested seven spiral notebooks. Hoping they are for the students who can’t afford the $90 check list, she told FOX 46 Charlotte she would feel good if the extra supplies were donated and allowed all kids to feel confident going back to school.
“If they asked you to donate for the other kids that don't have it, I would be more willing to do it and not question why I need seven notebooks," Houghton said.
